dressing changes post nail surgery
Redress your toe each day as follows:
- Leave your dressing in place when showering. Keep your shower short, less than 5 minutes is ideal (Don’t want that toe getting too soggy!).
- Remove the dressing. - Soak the toe for 3 minutes in warm saline solution (add 2-3 teaspoons of salt to ½ a litre of warm water and stir until dissolved).
- If needed, gently clean away any discharge with a cotton wool ball soaked in saline solution.
- Pat dry.
- Apply a drop of betadine at each surgical site.
- Cover the toe with a dressing.
Always keep your toe covered to help reduce the risk of infection. This includes at night and especially when you are out of the house!
Monitor your toe for signs of infection. Some minor discharge is normal. However pain, heat, swelling, odour, redness or even purplish discoloration can indicate things are not right. If you are concerned, please contact the clinic on 3202 4544.
To help speed up recovery:
- Try to avoid wearing tight fitting shoes.
- Avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks.
- Keep your toe dry (when not redressing).
